The History of Rubber Tree Sap

The history of the use of rubber tree sap

Natural latex has been cultivated for centuries, and is a true cultural tradition. Rubber tree sap has had many uses over time.
The first traces of the use of rubber tree sap date back to the time of the Aztecs. This natural material was then used to waterproof fabrics and to make balls for games . The latter consisted of keeping the latex ball in the air for as long as possible. However, it was not just a simple amusement: this game also had divinatory, religious, symbolic or warlike functions. At the time, latex was not only made from the rubber tree, but also from guayule or castilla elastica, which are other rubber trees.
Natural latex was later discovered by Europeans, notably Christopher Columbus, who recorded its use in his travel journals.  Brought back to Europe, natural latex was then used to erase ink traces: this would be the beginning of the eraser.
In 1783, during the development of the first hot air balloons, rubber tree sap was the basis of a waterproof varnish covering its canvas.
Natural latex then found more industrial uses: the sap was used on shoes or to make elastic bands for suspenders and garters . From 1835, rubber made from the hevea tree was used to make tires, boots and condoms.
However, rubber trees only grew in Brazil at the time, and rubber producers were unable to keep up with the high demand in the West. Rubber tree seeds were stolen from the natives by a British explorer and planted in Singapore: this was the beginning of large-scale rubber tree cultivation .
Natural latex continued to be developed, mainly in the automotive sector. However, an epidemic that killed the plants prompted manufacturers to develop synthetic latex , made from petroleum.

And now ?

However, Alba has chosen not to give in to the easy way out, and to offer you mattresses made from natural and organic latex , for the respect of the environment and your greatest comfort! The brand is also committed to respecting the Guatemalan producers of rubber tree sap from whom it sources its supplies.
Several labels are responsible for certifying the quality of alba products. The FSC and PEFC labels are issued by global organizations dedicated to eco-responsible forest management. They require annual checks for an optimal level of quality. The RainforestAlliance label, for its part, advocates responsible trade between agriculture, forestry and the company. The EUROLATEX label certifies that the latex used by alba is subject to strict specifications and does not contain any chemical elements. Finally, the tencel mattress cover is OEKO-TEX standard 100 certified, which means that it does not contain any toxic products, for the greatest respect of your skin!

The brand currently offers two mattress models: alba original and alba pearl.

The original mattress is made of 100% natural latex and high resilience foam in depth.
The alba pearl model is composed of a 100% natural latex welcome and support allowing progressive comfort. Indeed, its two layers of latex of different densities give it a soft welcome but a firm support in depth.

What are the benefits of alba products?

- Real natural : Legally, mattresses containing only 85% natural sap are allowed to be called "100% natural" mattresses. At alba, the slider has been pushed to the maximum so as not to mislead you. Since rubber tree sap is liquid in its natural state, it is impossible to manufacture a mattress composed solely of it. The maximum proportion of rubber tree sap for a mattress is 98%: this is what Maison alba has decided to offer its customers
- A safe composition : rubber tree sap naturally has a hypoallergenic, antibacterial and anti-mite composition without needing to be chemically treated. It is recommended for people suffering from allergies. It is also not dangerous for people allergic to latex, because it is completely natural!
- Unbeatable longevity : Compared to other technologies such as memory foam or pocket springs, the longevity of natural latex is unbeatable. Alba mattresses maintain their quality for 10 to 20 years, and are therefore much more durable than other types of fillings, whose comfort drops sharply after 5 years.
- An airy and absorbent material : the latex of alba mattresses allows air to circulate, allowing constant thermoregulation: the mattress remains fresh and airy.
- Strong sleeping independence : the partner's movements are absorbed and are not felt. The comfort of latex is also recognized by professionals, such as physiotherapists and osteopaths.
